Madagascar's Election: A Nervous Wait by A.R. Belobaka. The Economist. 30 Dec 2013.  The release of early returns has set off a nasty round of sniping between the two camps. The preliminary results show Mr Rajaonarimampianina with a small but probably decisive lead.

Hope in horizon for Madagascar as reconciliation talks end in Dar es Salaam  by John Kulekana.  Progress is being made during talks between Madagascar president Andry Rajoelina and President Jakaya Kikwete (he's mediating on part of the SADC).  This mediation is necessary after a 2009 coup in which the former president Ravolomanana was outsted.

Film outlines effects of illegal logging on lemurs by Danielle Muoio.  The Chronicle.  27 Nov 2012.  This film is evidently what exposed Gibson's use of illegal rosewood on their (your) guitars.  Gibson eventually paid $300K in fines.  Mark your calendars, the expose film premieres 18 December at 8PM on Animal Planet.

Cyclone Preparations Threatened. All Africa News. 23 Nov 2012.  A $6.1 million funding shortfall is jeopardizing the World Food Programme's (WFP) practice of pre-positioning relief supplies in manyareas vulnerable to cyclones. Madagascar Oil sees crude flowing from island soon Reuters. 30 Oct 2012.  If they do end up having a lot of oil, they could do well to get an intelligent economic advisor in place.  I might suggest someone with experience like Dr. Robert Looney, a former economic advisor to Iran.  Typically newly resource rich states focus on avoiding Dutch Disease as Nigeria did during their 1970's oil boom (during the last three decades of the 20th century they experienced a $300 billion windfall).  In focusing on this, though, they can neglect other important economic factors such as managing RER (real exchange rate) and inflation.  Sage advice and more information can be found on this topic in Okongo-Iweala's excellent 2008 IMF article Nigeria's Shot at Redemption.  There are extensive notes on the article here.

CRS Report on Madagascar's Political Crisis by Lauren Ploch and Nicolas Cook. 18 June 2012.

Why visit the real island of Madagascar?   by Rhett Butler 23 May 2005 Comprehensive, if dated.
